    Baby giraffe Zahara dies at the Abilene Zoo

    ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – On October 2, the baby giraffe Zahara died at Abilene Zoo after suffering a severe leg fracture.

    Zahara was born on July 20 to parents Malaika and Congo. The community chose her name and voted for her in the summer.

    “We are devastated by this tragic loss, ” said General Curator Robert Trejo. “Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community. We appreciate Zahara’s overwhelming support and love since her birth, and our hearts go out to everyone who felt a connection, especially her primary zookeepers.”

    The cause of the injury is undetermined, and she died during emergency care. The zoo continues to monitor the remaining members of the giraffe herd, ensuring their safety and health.
