BROWNWOOD, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – Longtime haunted house creators bring their spooky talents to the old Brown County Jail to raise funds for local non-profits.

The old Brown County Jail has seen many come and go in its years of service, but none like the visitors who are currently haunting it. This jail closed its doors to county use roughly 15 years ago, and while the old cells have long been out of use, the Spencer family is giving them a whole new purpose. Jeremiah Spencer and his family have been creating haunted houses for years. When they moved to Brownwood a couple of years ago, Jeremiah said they decided to bring their spooky expertise to the area.

“We didn’t do them for almost 11 years. And then we decided when we moved back here and started our business here, we decided that, hey, let’s try to get involved in the community. So, luckily, we’ve had the mayor behind us on a lot of it.”

Spencer outlined how their style is more of an experience for guests and that putting the whole thing together takes more than just a few light decorations.

“It’s actually a lot. People don’t realize how much of a build-out when you start running electricity and doing your animatronics and, you know, your smoke, your fog.”

The purpose behind the haunted house goes beyond providing a unique place to scare people. Jeremiah outlined how they hope to give families and children a safe place to have some fun, adding that they hope to use the funds raised in the event to donate to local non-profits to directly benefit those in the Brownwood community.

“We hope to see more people out. It will go for a good cause if we can raise enough money.”

The “325 Haunted House” event will begin this Friday, October 4th, and continue every weekend in October. It will extend its hours to every night during the last week of October.
