STEPHENS COUNTY, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – A 2010 cold case has been solved in Stephens County.

Charles Larry Johnson has been officially named a suspect in the murder of Jimmy Early Whitt, who was found dead inside a residence in Stephens County in January 2010.

A press release from the Texas Rangers states Johnson was initially identified as a suspect but was never arrested and the case was suspended in 2015 due to, “the lack of new leads or developments that would enable successful prosecution of the murder.”

The case was reopened in 2024 as part of the Texas Rangers Unsolved Crime Investigation Program, and Johnson was confirmed to be a suspect once again and was also found to be in possession of firearms and jewelry from Whitt’s home, according to the press release.

Prosecutors agreed there is now enough evidence to proceed with a case against Johnson, however, he died in March 2022.
