ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — The morning drive won’t be the same in Abilene or the Big Country. Dwayne ‘Doc’ Alexander, a familiar voice and half of KBCY’s morning duo of “Doc and Kelly,” passed away on Monday, October 15.

Doc has been a staple over the radio airwaves and part of country station 99.7 KBCY for nearly 40 years, with his voice likely reaching millions of listeners’ ears. Doc was not only an icon for the Big Country but a fierce friend to many in the community, and KTAB/KRBC sought them out to tell Doc’s story.

    Josh Graham

Josh Graham works for Habitat for Humanity and has been a close friend of Doc for many years. He said, “I said, Hey, Doc, I hope all has been well. I hope that you continue striving and that everything you know is great for you and your family. I hope you take care. And Doc messaged me back and said, ‘One day at a time, my friend.’ It never mattered about business or anything like that. He cared about everyone wholeheartedly.”

Country Music artist Mark Powell had many interactions with Doc and shared, “Everyone loved Doc. You know, the thing that you just can’t replace is the fact that he never had a bad day. Always had a smile on his face, and he was friends with everybody.”

    Justin Case

Retired radio personality and former co-worker of Doc’s, Justin Case, spoke about the adventures he would have with his friend Doc. Saying, “Good-hearted. He would help anybody do anything. A genuine gentleman. I mean, truly was. Even when we worked, we worked together, and we played together. We’ve been to Sturgis two or three times. Road the whole way. The last time we trailered it back because we got tired of the bugs. He’s going to be sorely missed because he was a great soul.”

    Charles “Sarge” Haney

Charles Haney, or “Sarge” as he is known by most, was a close friend of Doc’s for decades and outlined a recent moment he had with Doc. Saying, “This whole town grew up with Doc. I don’t even know any words that are good enough. He was Doc. He met no stranger. Everybody was Doc’s friend. He was doing remote, I’ll never forget this, at Market Street. I drove up and surprised him. We were sitting there talking for about 20 minutes, and the remote was over. I said, “Doc, Love you.” We shook hands, gave him a hug, and he said, “I love you too, Sarge.” I got in my pickup, and he goes, “Sarge!”  I said, “What’s up?” and Doc, He goes, “I love you!” Doc was my friend. He was my brother. And I will always love you, Doc.”

Longtime co-host and very close friend, Kelly Jay of the Doc & Kelly morning show for KBCY, reflected fondly on Doc and shared how their friendship has been a long-standing pillar for both of them. Saying, “We very first started radio together in 1987, so we’ve been like, I guess you could say radio brothers for a long, long time. You know, we told our whole lives on the air together and we raised our kids together and did all that. So, everybody got to hear about that every day. And we talk about our everyday life. There are many things throughout the community that are going to always remind me of being with Doc in the morning. You wake up with the same guy for, you know, 35, 40 years. That’s a long time. A sad day but a great day for heaven. And he’s up there, I’m sure, on the radio, sitting right next to Jesus. So, there he is.”
