On February 29, deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence in northern Brown County. They separated a female victim from a man named James Darrell Gilbreath, 66, who then went inside a guest house on the property.

A press release stated that Gilbreath exited the guest house with a firearm and began pointing it at a deputy while ignoring commands to put the gun down. When he shouldered the rifle and aimed it directly at the deputy, the deputy shot Gilbreath.
