Introducing the Darrington Cascadia Dirt Cup “Main Character of the Race” Award
By Cy Whitling,
2024-07-25
After a brief hiatus, we're back with another Main Character of the Race, but this one has a bit of a twist! So read on for all the details.Last race had a little bit of everything, mud, dogs, moms, it was an absolute hoot. So if you're not caught up, catch the recap here.
For the 5th round of the Cascadia Dirt Cup, taking place this weekend in Darrington, Washington, the core of the competition will be the same: We remain convinced that without the fans, bike racing is just a bunch of dorks in silly clothes mouth breathing in the woods. Cheering, heckling, offering (un)helpful advice on line choice - the fans are the soul of any event. But too often, the spectacle is their only reward. Until now. We’ll be celebrating the most dedicated, loudest, most committed spectator at Darrington with the “Main Character of the Race” award presented by 5 Hour ENERGY and Bike Mag.
But our fearless host, Shaun Webby won't be making the rounds in his signature disco ball helmet and 5-hour ENERGY track suit this weekend. Instead, he's stepping inside the tape to race. So, first of all, if Shaun has heckled you in the past, this is your chance to get him back! Don't pull any punches, do your best to unnerve, distract, and otherwise trash talk him.
We'll have a stand-in host, bringing their own special flavor to the competition this weekend, so dress to impress and bring your best noise making accessories. We'll also be checking in with the mom from the last race to find out if she's stepped her heckle game up.
The Details
When: Saturday, July 27 (kids and adults are running on the same day this weekend.
Where: North Mountain, Darrington, WA
Rules: This competition is open to both spectators, and volunteers. So Course Marshals, Timers, and the like, don’t feel left out, we appreciate you so much! This competition, much like most heckling, is loose. All you need to do is show up (preferably in costume, bonus points for group, themed costumes) and make some noise all day.
Remember, heckling should add to the race experience, not detract from it. Stay out of the way of racers, keep it positive, and stick around to cheer ALL the racers on. If you’ve got some awesome heckle antics going on, and the camera crew misses you, feel free to tag @bikemag and @5hourenergy in your stories, and we’ll hustle over and check out your scene.
That’s it, show up, blow it out, make some noise! We can’t wait to see you on course!
