LISA Brings ‘New’ Energy and ‘Rockstar’ Vibes to MTV Video Music Awards Performance

“Two years ago this artist lit up the stage with the superstar K-pop group BLACKPINK,” teased ’00s pop culture icon Paris Hilton, introducing the next performer at Wednesday night’s (Sept. 11) MTV Video Music Awards. “Tonight she makes her VMA debut as a solo artist. That’s hot. And she’s sliving. Give it up for LISA.”

Wearing a red fringe top with red leather sleeves — and beginning her performance seated in a red chair in front of a red mirror — the Korean pop solo superstar began her performance with Rosalía collab “New Woman,” quickly joining a bunch of black-clad dancers at center stage for a full chair routine.

LISA then did a little runway walk on a moving floor, before the performance transitioned to a rendition of her prior single “Rockstar.” She performed the single in front of a big star at center stage, with flames in the background, as she executed air-guitaring choreography while flanked by her leathered-out dancers.

“Rockstar” is up for four awards at this year’s Video Music Awards: best K-pop, best editing, best art direction and best choreography. As a member of BLACKPINK, LISA is a four-time winner at the VMAs, with the group taking home song of the summer in 2020 (“How You Like That”), best metaverse performance in 2022 ( Blackpink: The Virtual ), and best choreography (“Pink Venom”) and group of the year in 2023.

Both “Rockstar” and “New Woman” reached the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year, peaking at No. 70 and No. 97 so far, respectively.
