    Burning? Why?

“Fire… was an accident caused by a contractor burning debris.“ Why? Why do we persist in this ancient practice that is dangerous, polluting and unnecessary? Landfills exist for biodegradable, nontoxic debris and are preferable to the pollution of burning. These fires should be outlawed.

    Imagine

Imagine a country where politicians work across the aisle for the good of the nation. Imagine a country where the truth matters and the rule of law is not undermined by endless legal appeals to avoid justice. Imagine a country where everyone can intelligently discuss their political concerns without slander and threats. Imagine a country where racial tensions are not ignited through politician’s continuous lies. Imagine a country where the leader is not a billionaire felon or want-to-be dictator. These were everyone’s realities and desires before Donald Trump, the great destroyer of democracy.

    Pope is right

I agree with Pope Francis that in this presidential election we have to pick the “lesser evil.” Truth is, the border was more secure, groceries were cheaper, interest rates for homes were lower and we were not on the brink of a World War under Donald Trump. Don’t vote for the man, vote for the policies.

    Two questions

Two questions: First, where is Dave Elliott? Second, why are eggs $4.89 a dozen?

    Coast losses

Why is it our big-time coast teams such as Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs and Harrison Central always seem to lose when playing teams north of Hattiesburg, especially the Jackson area?

    ARs

The Commentary piece in the Saturday edition concerning gun deaths and kids was riddled with inaccurate information. The author blames the AR15 Assault Rifle as the major evil. Some corrections in the article should include the AR15 is Armalite Rifle #15, not “Assault Rifle” 15. The AR shoots a fast .22 caliber bullet, not some megadeath cannon ball. There are even conversion kits to allow shooters to use the same, cheap, .22 bullets you buy in a country supply store on the weekend. The AR shoots like any other commonly used firearm: one trigger pull one bullet. Yes, just like Wyatt Earp’s six shooter. ARs don’t even come close to the havoc caused by knives. The 541 deaths from all kinds of rifles in the U.S. during 2022 compared to 1,630 deaths by knives would lead to banning knives first. All this said, we need to reintroduce gun safety in our schools where it was before these idiotic school shootings.

    Safer schools

There have been no mass shootings in urban high schools, because they have medal detectors and clear backpacks. Even at football games you can only take in a very small purse that you have to open for inspection. What’s the hesitation about duplicating these practices?
