The final week of non-region play came and went with plenty of excitement, even with a chunk of Mississippi Coast teams on a bye week.

A big message was sent from one of the area’s biggest powers and another Coast team won a wild, down-to-the-minute game to highlight the biggest moments of Week 6. The full list of final scores and more high school football coverage can be found at sunherald.com .

These were the biggest stories of the week.

    Picayune

Picayune was resoundingly successful through its non-district gauntlet, capping the run with a 24-21 road win at Petal.

The Maroon Tide have proven resilient with back-to-back three-point road wins following Week 5’s win at Ocean Springs. Allen Magee caught two touchdown passes from Brandon Parker and it was a fourth-down completion from Parker to Darrell Smith that sealed the win with 48 seconds left.

There won’t be any time to relax for Picayune, which will open district play at home against Pascagoula.

    Stone

The Tomcats have won two of their last three and continue to dominate defensively after a 32-0 win over St. Stanislaus.

Zander Howard threw two touchdown passes and both to KJ Galloway. Kylan Burnett and Ayden Green each eclipsed 100 rushing yards and scored three combined times during Stone’s best offensive outing of the season.

Stone’s 12.6 points allowed per game is second on the Coast, trailing only Pascagoula.

    Gautier

The Gators won a thriller over Columbia, 42-41, to head into district with a 4-1 record and a three-game winning streak.

Trey Irving scored the go-ahead touchdown from 15 yards out — his third rushing touchdown and fifth total of the night — with just over two minutes remaining. The Wildcats would score with five seconds left, but Gautier denied Columbia’s two-point conversion attempt for the win.

Gautier is averaging 42.7 points a game over its last three contests and will meet a Vancleave team allowing just 18.3 points per game during its own three-game win streak.

    D’Iberville

The Warriors are quietly going about returning to form and flexed their strength in a 35-7 win over Wayne County in which they forced a running clock throughout the entire second half.

Andre Crosby led with 100 yards rushing and five different Warriors scored a touchdown. Jordan Walley, who is the younger brother of Minnesota’s Justin Walley and Mississippi State’s Jaden Walley, threw two touchdown passes and ran for a 52-yard score.

D’Iberville opens regional play with the two biggest stalwarts of Region 4-7A, starting with Ocean Springs.

    Poplarville

After nearly upending West Jones, Poplarville bounced back this week with a 28-14 win over Moss Point to open Region 8-4A play 1-0.

The Hornets are 5-1 and rolling despite playing without their phenom running back Ty Keys. Five different backs have 100 rushing yards on the year, led by Nick Miller’s 445. It was Thomas Lambert who led the charge against the Tigers with 141 yards and three touchdowns.

Poplarville has a key district matchup next against Pass Christian.
