Former President Jimmy Carter said he wants to live to see his 100th birthday so he can vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Carter, who will turn 100 on October 1, has been in hospice care for roughly the past year and a half. In June, Carter's grandson, Jason , told Southern Living that his 99-year-old grandfather was "no longer awake every day."

However, Jason recently told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the former president has been "more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza" this month.

Jason said Carter's son, Chip , asked him earlier this week if he wanted to live to see his 100th birthday.

"I'm only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris," Carter said, according to Jason.

The former president wouldn't have to wait until November 5 to cast his vote for Harris, the Democratic nominee . Early voting in Georgia kicks off on October 15, and absentee ballots are sent out up to 29 days before the election.

The state of Georgia also doesn't have any laws stopping a ballot from being counted due to death between the early voting period and Election Day.
