BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After decades of serving the community, one of our area’s oldest thrift stores is about to close.

Calling it a heartbreaking decision, the Salvation Army has announced the closure of its Thrift Store on Griswold Street in Binghamton.

Over the years, the store has sold hundreds of thousands of used items including clothing, home goods, furniture and more.

The stores are a major component of the funding for the Salvation Army’s rehabilitation programs and other outreach efforts. However, the organization says it can no longer financially sustain the retail outlet.

Salvation Army stresses that it is not leaving the area, continuing to offer assistance to those in need with food, rent and utility payments through its location at 130 Washington Street in downtown Binghamton. Its donation drop-off, warehouse and distribution center on Griswold Street will remain providing items for remaining thrift stores in Endicott, Oneonta, Ithaca and Horseheads.

The Griswold Street store closes on July 15.
