Police crackdown on fireworks during holiday week

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – With the Fourth of July just days away, Mayor Jared Kraham is reminding residents that fireworks are illegal in the City of Binghamton.

Kraham issued the following statement on Tuesday:

“As the Fourth of July approaches, I’m reminding residents that fireworks are illegal in the City of Binghamton.

“It’s dangerous to set off fireworks in neighborhoods, parks, near wooded areas or anywhere with children and others nearby. When used by anyone other than permitted professionals, fireworks can cause serious injuries and destructive fires. They are also a top cause of calls to police about noise and neighborhood disturbances, putting a strain on resources at a time when our first responders are already busier than usual.

“These last few years, the Binghamton Police Department’s Community Response Team (CRT) has made illegal fireworks a focus, especially during holiday weeks. Thanks in part to their work, we’re hearing less about illegal fireworks in our neighborhoods.

“I’ve asked Police to keep the focus on illegal fireworks through the holiday week. And I’m asking residents to please refrain from setting off illegal fireworks and enjoy one of the professional fireworks shows scheduled for this week instead, including after the Rumble Ponies game at Mirabito Stadium on July 3.”
