BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – For this weekend, the baseball team is no longer the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, they’re going by the Binghamton Spiedies, and wearing jerseys drawn by local residents.

For this weekend’s three game home stand against the Erie Seawolves, the Binghamton team will be wearing, and auctioning off jerseys that were designed and colored by residents at the HCA, Helping Celebrate Abilities.

In March, HCA clients colored in blank outlines of spiedies and Char Pit Charlie , the mascot for Lupo’s. The Rumble Ponies took all of the drawings and put them on jerseys.

Today, the team held a news conference to announce that the jerseys will be auctioned off on Minor League Baseball’s auction website starting on Friday, and all of the proceeds will be donated to the HCA.

“This is the jersey that the players will wear this weekend. So, we’ve already created memories for these young people, because they now can say that they had a participation in creating a professional baseball jersey,” said Richard Tylicki, General Manager of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

The first game begins at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, with gates opening at 6, and fireworks after the game. Then, on Saturday, gates open at 5, and the first 1,000 fans will receive an un-colored Char Pit Charlie bobble head, with a paint kit so you can dress him up however you like. There will even be a designated painting area in the stadium.

The president of Lupo’s, Sam Lupo, says the drawings on the jerseys were never meant to be perfect, that’s what makes it so memorable.

“If you look very closely, you will see where some of the residents have been very neat, very careful on their paintings. And then you’re going to see where some of the scribbles, that was the youngest that did this, and we wanted to make sure that all residents were included in this project,” said Lupo.

If you paint your bobble head, post a photo of it online, tag Lupo’s and the Rumble Ponies for a chance to win a prize.

Throughout the entire weekend, original spieides at the ballpark, including chicken and pork, will be buy-one get-one free. Plus, there will be four different specialty spiedies.

The jersey auction begins at gametime on Friday, and runs until July 26 at 7 p.m.
