City of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham was joined by members of the First Ward Action Council, Home HeadQuarters, New York State Division of Homes and Community Renewal to announce the launch of a new $5 million housing repair program for Binghamton residents.

The New York State Targeted Home Improvement (T-HIP) pilot grant program channels home repair assistance to low and moderate income households through non-profit organizations. T-HIP has awarded funding to 10 communities throughout New York thus far, specifically in areas of high housing distress.

In Binghamton, the program will allow select homeowners to receive up to $40,000 to go toward projects like roof repairs or replacements, addressing code violations, home utility systems and mitigating other unsafe conditions.

How the T-HIP program works in Binghamton

The T-HIP program is currently accepting applications over a two-year period and is expected to accept an estimated 135 local households.

Kraham expressed the need for such funding for hardworking taxpaying families.

“This grant will go directly to families that need to improve their housing stock," he said. "It will change the face of many neighborhoods across the city of Binghamton."

T-HIP will offer an alternative to traditional lending sources for families. For homeowners who may not meet the requirements, Syracuse-based nonprofit Home HeadQuarters has given out about 800 home improvement loans throughout the Binghamton area.

“Home HeadQuarters is grateful to New York State, Governor Hochul and HCR for ensuring that much needed home improvement dollars get into the hands of Binghamton homeowners who have long struggled to receive this kind of vital assistance," said Kerry Quaglia, Home Headquarters founder and CEO. "We look forward to working with our Binghamton partners to help homeowners get these home repairs underway as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
