Binghamton, N.Y. ( WIVT/WBGH ) — The Broome County Land Bank is continuing its trend of brightening up neighborhoods with the the removal of another eye sore.

Earlier this week the land bank demolished in 8 and 8 and a half Cypress Street in the City of Binghamton.

The Land Bank says the properties have sat vacant for several years, and have been condemned as structurally unsound by the city’s code enforcement office.

Broome County Executive, Jason Garnar says that this was a long time coming, and the neighbors have been waiting a long time to see something new.

“Always great to see the neighbors who are out here. Because they’ve been waiting a long time for this one house to come down in their neighborhood. Sometimes it takes just one house in a neighborhood to really lift that neighborhood up, and that’s what’s happening here,” Garnar said.

The building marks the first of six properties to be torn down through a partnership with Greater Opportunities. Including properties in the Town of Barker, Colesville, Windsor, and Town of Union.

The total cost of all six demolitions will be over $106,000. Funding for the projects was secured through the state Department of Homes and Community Renewal’s Land Bank Initiative grant program.
