Police: 3 arrested for string of fryer oil thefts in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) — Three Middletown suspects were arrested in the middle of the night on Thursday, August 1, for allegedly stealing a “large quantity” of oil from businesses around New York State, BPD announced.

According to police, at around 2:45 a.m. on Thursday, Binghamton Police Patrol received a License Plate Reader (LPR) alert of a box truck being wanted regarding a Grand Larceny investigation in the Middletown, NY area.

The alert came from the area near The Clinton St Café, and was seen leaving the café when the search was on. After investigating the café, police say the oil containers inside were emptied and damaged.

Police say stolen fryer oil complaints have been an issue throughout the state, and when patrols conducted a traffic stop and search of the box truck on Glenwood Ave, a large amount of oil was found.

The three suspects police say are connected to the box truck were arrested and charged with the following:

Lerin Sepulveda, 37 years-old of Middletown, NY

• Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th
• Obstruction of Government Administration

Porfirio Xol Caal, 27 years-old of Middletown, NY

• Criminal Mischief 4th
• Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th

Marvin Choc Tiul, 25 years-old of Middletown, NY

• Criminal Mischief 4th
• Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th

Police say the suspects are believed to have stolen oil from other businesses in the Binghamton area. The investigation is ongoing and could result in more charges.
