Thousands of community leaders across the country back Whatcom County’s urge to declare national fentanyl emergency
WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A major organization has backed Whatcom County’s effort to address the fentanyl crisis on a national level. The National Association of Counties (NACo) on Monday, July 15, unanimously approved a resolution that was passed by the county council earlier this year asking to declare a federal emergency over the crisis.
Alcoa’s Intalco aluminum smelter faces lawsuit for exceeding emissions limits
FERNDALE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A former aluminum smelter near Ferndale is facing a lawsuit for violating air quality standards. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed the suit on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) against Alcoa’s Intalco Aluminum plant on July 18 in the U.S. District Court in Seattle. The DOJ claims Intalco exceeded the emissions limits set by the Clean Air Act every day between Sept. 2019 and Aug. 2020.

Just 12% of police officers nationwide are women. Washington state lags behind that already low number at 11%. Several law enforcement agencies statewide have signed on to a goal to increase women in the ranks. They’re recruiting women by offering strong mentorship programs and better-suited gear and facilities, among other strategies. But success is mixed, and larger agencies especially continue to struggle.

All of my siblings went to college, I was the youngest in my family, and I was expected to go to college as well. I went to what is now called Central Washington University.
