Mass die-off of freshwater mussels in Wisconsin leads to discovery of new parasite
Researchers have discovered a new parasite in freshwater mussels after investigating hundreds of mussels that died along the Embarrass River in Shawano County six years ago. The findings were recently published in the international, peer-reviewed journal Parasitologia. Researchers with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Geological Survey and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources were among agencies that collaborated to study the mass die-off in 2018. Biologists observed sick mussels lying on their sides on the surface of the river with open shells when they’re normally buried in the river bottom.

Evergreen 5K marks 45 years
The 45th-annual Evergreen Road Run/Walk will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 in Park Falls. The event kicks off Saturday activities as part of the 71st-annual Flambeau Rama.The race start and finish lines will be in front of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, located at 276 S 5th Ave,. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the race starting at 10 a.m., rain or shine. Pre-registration for t-shirts has passed but race registration will be accepted through Friday, July 26 at a cost of $10. Same day registration will be $25. Medals will be awarded to the first three male and female finishers in each class. Professional timing will be overseen by Tortoise and Hare Race Management.
