    Birmingham man found fatally shot in front yard

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A 55-year-old man Birmingham man was found fatally shot in the front yard of a residence Friday morning.

    According to officer Truman Fitzgerald with the Birmingham Police Department, police were dispatched to a Shot Spotter call around 4:40 a.m. in the 1000 block of Cotton Avenue. Police were then notified a person was shot in the area.

    Officers found Renard West lying unresponsive in front of a residence who was shot. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced West dead.

    People in the community gave Birmingham police a clothing description of the suspect. Officers found a man matching the description walking in the area. Police took the suspect into custody, who possessed a handgun.

    The suspect was taken to BPD Headquarters. Homicide detectives will interview him.
