    STAIR of Birmingham seeking volunteers for new school year

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Start the Adventure in Reading of Birmingham is seeking volunteers for the 2024-25 school year.

    The nonprofit stated it helps students with literacy and reading skills. In the 2023-24 school year, volunteer tutors conducted 5,051 tutor sessions to 191 students. One-on-one tutoring sessions occur four afternoons a week.

    In the 2023-24 school year, STAIR of Birmingham stated first-grade students increased their ability to use phonics to read and spell new words by 31%. Second-grade students showed a 23% increase in the same area.

    STAIR of Birmingham announced students who started in its program with under 60% proficiency in phonological awareness demonstrated an average gain of 33%. Students who came into the program with knowledge of fewer than 60% of consonant sounds displayed an average gain of 38%.
