Company to use Southern Research funding to “challenge status quo”
A Huntsville-based pharmaceutical technology company is using recent funding from Southern Research to develop its antibody therapeutics platform. <\p> SCORE Pharmaceuticals was one of eight companies that received a combined $2.5 million from Southern Research as part of its Therapeutics Development Fund (TDF). The TDF was established as a result of the Innovate Alabama Tax Credit created in 2023.<\p>
Birmingham barbecue joint permanently closes
A longtime barbecue restaurant in Birmingham has closed its doors after 32 years of business. <\p> Rib-It-Up, a family-run joint located on 830 First Ave. N., unveiled its plans to permanently close on social media on July 12. The post read that an "evolving economic landscape" and difficulties hiring additional staff were reasons for closing. <\p>
Two Winn-Dixie stores gearing up for Aldi conversion
Two Winn-Dixie stores in Pinson and Bessemer are next up to be converted into Aldi stores. <\p> According to an Aldi spokesperson, the stores located on 4701 Center Point Road in Pinson and 2910 Morgan Road in Bessemer will be closed for renovations starting in mid-August. <\p>
CMBS apartment distress surges as operators struggle to refinance
Distress in the multifamily sector of commercial real estate is mounting as debt issued during a time of ultra-low interest rates is coming due.<\p> Among commercial mortgage-backed securities loans for single-borrower, large multifamily properties, the rate of distress is up 185% in the past six months, according to an analysis by Wayne, Pennsylvania-based commercial real estate data-analytics platform CRED iQ.<\p>
Jefferson County auto shop sells for $2M
A Jefferson County auto shop has entered a sale-leaseback agreement with a California company.<\p> The Express Oil Change at 600 Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive in Dolomite sold for $2.1 million on June 27. Express Oil Change LLC, the seller, entered a 20-year lease agreement the same day.<\p>
Bham affiliate a stalking horse bidder for retail giant Delta Apparel
Delta Apparel, a Duluth, Georgia-based wholesale clothing manufacturer and owner of popular brand Salt Life, may soon close operations in multiple states, and a company with ties to Birmingham getting in on the movement. <\p> According to multiple WARN notices submitted to the state ofFlorida by Delta Apparel's chief restructuring officer, J. Tim Pruban, Salt Life store closures and layoffs are expected to occur Aug. 29 if the parent company cannot sell the brand. The WARN notices indicate that 98 Florida workers, including 40 in South Florida, could face layoffs. <\p>
Million Dollar Monday: 100-plus-acre Calera estate for sale
A Calera estate near Interstate 65 in has entered the market. <\p> The property at 244 High Bridle Circle is listed for nearly $4 million and is close to the Timberline Golf Course. It contains over 113 acres and has space for horse grazing. A 9-acre pond with a built-in boat lift is also on the property. <\p>

The Epilepsy Foundation Alabama has named a new executive director.<\p> Jeremiah C. Stone Sr. has been named the organization’s new executive director of the Gulf South Territory, serving Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. <\p>
Bham firm wins bid to lease Shipt Tower, Inverness Center
A local firm has been awarded management of nearly 1 million square feet of office space in Birmingham.<\p> Cushman & Wakefield / EGS Commercial Real Estate Inc. will lease and manage Shipt Tower and four office buildings at Inverness Center now that Dallas-based business and real estate advisory firm Riveron has been named the properties' court-appointed receiver.<\p>

A new option is coming to the U.S. 280 corridor that will offer event space, charcuterie spreads, a quaint bar and hard-to-find cheeses. <\p> Board in Birmingham owner Corinne Sweet has inked a lease at 5426 U.S. Highway 280 in the Terrace at Greystone shopping center and plans to open a brick-and-mortar space complete with a restaurant this fall. She's aiming for a September opening. <\p>
Jewelry startup opens brick-and-mortar location in Lakeview District
A jewelry company has opened a new salon suite in the Lakeview District. <\p> Happy Links, which specializes in permanent jewelry, has opened a brick-and-mortar location at 2901 Fourth Ave. S. inside Image Studios 360, according to its website. Co-owners Hannah Stallings and Sabrina Smith started the business in August 2023 and plan a grand opening for this weekend.<\p>
