West Nile Has Been Found in Iowa Mosquitoes
The good news is that at the time of writing, no humans in Iowa have yet tested positive for the West Nile virus. Mosquitos on the other hand have been found containing the virus in central Iowa. According to KCRG, mosquitoes were trapped at a park in West Ames sometime in mid-July. The park where these mosquitoes were found is sprayed or fogged every Wednesday night. Some of these mosquitoes contained the West Nile virus.
OPD: Man Failed to Appear, Fled from Police on Bicycle
An Ottumwa man faces charges after failing to appear to child support hearing and fleeing from police with drugs on a bicycle. 30-year-old Carl Dimmitt was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with official acts, possession of a controlled substance – marijuana – 1st offense, and failure to appear for child support hearing.

Shower and storm chances linger, hotter air still in the near future
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - A slow-moving cold front brings a chance for some rain to the area. The morning starts out dry, but the cold front moves closer by later in the morning toward the afternoon. This could provide the focus for additional development during that time on a scattered basis. A few storms could be strong, with an isolated incidence of stronger winds possible. Washington Woman Arrested on Felony Abuse Charges
On Saturday, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested a subject with Washington County warrants. They arrested 59-year-old Bobbie Smith of Washington on three counts of dependent adult abuse, all Class C felonies. According to court documents, it was reported that the victim had been in Smith’s care since January 28th, 2024. While at the Washington County Hospital, it was reported that the victim was severely dehydrated, had physical injuries, and had not been receiving food or necessary medications. It was also determined that during the time the victim was in Smith’s care, they were confined to areas of the home, unsupervised, and denied access to food, medication, and clothing. Medical staff concluded that medical findings were consistent with the victim’s reports of abuse and neglect and would have caused injury and severe discomfort. According to prior medical records and medical staff treating the victim, they have declined significantly while being in the care of Smith. Smith was taken to the Washington County Jail, where she is being held on a $30,000 cash-only bond. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
