BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — The skyline in one part of the capital city will look a bit different soon.

Tuesday morning, workers began tearing down the nearly century-old water tower along Avenue F in Bismarck.

The 107-foot water tower was built in 1938, but the city decommissioned it around 2003.

Last year, the city considered replacing the water tower with a cell phone tower.

That’s when neighbors living under the water tower chipped in and bought the property.

Use caution when conditions are smoky

Kim Jondahl has been looking at the water tower for five years but says the old metal structure is charming in its own way.

“It was a consideration when I purchased the house,” she stated, “but I looked at it as this iconic 1938 bit of Bismarck history, and I joke with people who come over that it’s my big blue garden art sculpture in the back yard, so I’ve loved it.”

Neighbors tell KX News once the old tower is removed, they’ll hire a builder to construct at least one home on the lot.
