When I drink tea, I sometimes add honey. I'm a believer in the wealth of value of honey. Did you know that honey offers a range of benefits due to its composition of sugars, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants? I have also been know to take a spoonful of honey, just because I like it!

Honey is a natural sweetener and a healthier alternative to refined sugar. It contains glucose and fructose, which can provide a quick energy boost. Also, it contains flavonoids and phenolic acids, which help protect cells from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Although honey contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, calcium, and iron, it also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in promoting wound healing and treating burns. It creates a protective barrier and provides a moist environment that aids in tissue regeneration. I used it, after a serious dog bite, which required surgery, I bought Manuka Honey to heal the large wound. My surgeon was surprised how well it healed and how quickly. As it was easy to apply, it reduced the number of home visits the doctor ordered, saving me money.

Moms have been giving their children honey as a natural remedy for soothing sore throats and reducing coughing, especially in children. But it helps us seniors also, for digestive health as well. Honey can help with acid reflux and gastritis. It acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. The antimicrobial properties of honey can help in fighting infections and boosting the immune system. Something we seniors need.

Honey is a natural moisturizer by retaining moisture in the skin, making it an excellent ingredient for skincare. The antioxidants in honey can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by protecting the skin from oxidative damage. I suspect it might be too late for me in this department, but you should give it a try.

In addition to the above, honey is still a form of sugar, it has been shown to help in weight management when used in moderation and as a replacement for more refined sugars. Diabetics need to discuss usage with their doctors, but there are studies that show its a better solution, than refined sugar. And for us seniors, it may help improve sleep quality by increasing the release of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

Some studies suggest that the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in honey may benefit brain health and improve memory. The darker varieties tend to offer more antioxidants than lighter varieties . While honey has many benefits, it should be consumed in moderation due to its high sugar content, and it should not be given to infants under one year old due to the risk of botulism. It’s also important to know that some producers dilute honey with plain syrup. Although honey adulteration is illegal in most countries, it remains a widespread problem. I get mine straight from the hive, of a friend. Usually best to buy local. Hope you enjoy.
