Line Dancing: Fun, Social, & Beneficial for Seniors!

So, part of my decision for relief of boredom, was to join the senior center, that I mentioned in my last article. I took the line dancing class. Here is what I experienced. There isn't going to be any references at the end, this is just my personal thoughts. I'm going back, tuesdays and thursdays for more! Line dancing has many benefits, both physical and mental. Not boring, and it was FUN!

First and foremost, line dancing is a great way to get your heart pumping, which improves cardiovascular health. That was my goal. Even though I walk, this really got my heart pumping. It can also help to lose weight, as you're burning calories too.

The choreographed steps in line dancing require some coordination, which will enhance my balance and motor skills. I felt my sneakers were too heavy and klunky, so I won't wear them next time. Don't want to slip around too much, but heavy sneakers just didn't cut it. It's was enough to feel good about, not really strenuous. We were all seniors, and nobody tripped or fell. The repetitive movements probably helped to build muscle strength, particularly in my legs and core, and will eventually increase my stamina. I was exhausted afterwards. I lasted 1 hour.

The range of movements involved in line dancing will hopefully help to improve my flexibility and reduce my risk of falling. Weight-bearing movements in line dancing help to strengthen bones. we know that's good.

Here is another thought, it helped me to memorize and recalling the dance routines. Doing the steps over and over at our senior pace, will help enhance our memory and mental functioning.

Dancing to music was fun. The social aspect was also great. We all made goofs and could laugh about it. This type of activity reduced my stress and improved my mood by hopefully releasing endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. Kinda like chocolate! I honestly felt great afterwards, tired but happy.

The mental concentration required to repeat steps and stay in time with the music provided me with energy and mental stimulation. I hope this is something to help keep my mind sharp, having all that blood pumping through my brain and body.

Socially, line dancing is typically done in a group setting, which fosters social interaction and can help to build friendships. It's accessible to people of all ages and skill levels, making it a great way to meet new people. There was a group of coffee drinkers afterwards that laughed about their morning.

I have to tell you, I felt more confident about myself, for putting myself out there. As I get better, I'm sure my confidence will grow, which can only help in other areas of my life. I looked up line dancing on you tube, and practiced over the weekend, so I would do better in class. I like to feel like I accomplished things, gives me great satisfaction.

All in all, the line dancing was a fun, social, and low-impact activity that provided me with several benefits. Think about trying it, I found it a great choice for myself to improve my physical health, mental sharpness, and inceased my social connections. As always, talk to your doctor first, if you have concerns.
