[ U.S Politics] In a high-stakes diplomatic mission, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas landed in Mexico City this week with their sights set on the pressing issue of migration across the shared border.

The US-Mexico border has been a flashpoint for years, but the Biden administration has faced intensifying criticism due to the dramatic rise in apprehensions. In November 2023 alone, over 230,000 migrants were encountered at the southern border, a historic high.

That high was surpassed in November with CBP’s total encounters along the southwest border at 242,418.

The continuous surge is putting immense pressure on the US immigration system and fueling political tensions both domestically and internationally.

According to the Whitehouse, President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the delegation representing the United States “reaffirmed their existing commitments on fostering an orderly, humane, and regular migration”. They also agreed to meet again in January 2024.

Notably absent from the trip was Vice President Kamala Harris, designated by President Biden as the point person on the border in March 2021.

In 2021, Vice President Kamala Harris was given the high-profile task of tackling the complex issue of immigration specifically focusing on addressing the root causes that drive people to migrate from Central America to the United States.

In May 2021, Vice President Harris launched a Call to Action for Northern Central America that challenged U.S. corporations to invest and create economic opportunity in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. To date, the Call to Action and the Partnership for Central America (PCA) have galvanized more than $4.2 billion in private sector commitments to create economic opportunity in northern Central America.- The Whitehouse

June 2021, Harris met with President of Mexico Obrador:

We made clear that the United States considers Mexico to be a partner on many of these issues," Harris told reporters after the meetings, hailing a "new era" of bilateral relations. Lopez Obrador called the encounter "pleasant and beneficial- Via Reuters

The Biden/Harris administration has overseen record breaking immigration numbers including over 3 Million Illegal immigrants in this fiscal year the Daily Signal reported.

According to the Whitehouse briefing Vice President Harris was not in attendance in this week’s diplomacy efforts. Harris has been focused on touring U.S college campuses advocating for abortion and voting rights.
