Never Too Much: Trailer For Highly-Anticipated Luther Vandross Documentary Drops

The first trailer for the highly-anticipated Luther Vandross documentary just dropped, showing a peek inside the life of one of soul music’s most enigmatic stars.

Presented by Giant Pictures, Luther: Never Too Much will have nationwide sneak previews through AMC theaters before the film opens in theaters throughout North America starting Nov. 1. It will then premiere on CNN, OWN, and streaming service MAX in 2025.

In a statement , award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter said that it was “a joy” to work on the project.

“Luther was a spectacularly talented performer, composer and producer. His influence was found in multiple genres, and it was a delight to discover each one. It has been so much fun to see longtime fans remember why they love him, and new fans come to understand his brilliance.”

The documentary on the legendary performer, who died in 2005 at the age of 54, had its world premiere at Sundance this year, kickstarting a successful festival run, including the Tribeca Film Festival and Nantucket Film Festival.

“The whole Giant Pictures team fell in love with Luther: Never Too Much following its stellar film festival run this year. The film is a huge crowd-pleaser and a must-see, not only for existing fans of Luther Vandross, but also for those discovering his incredible talents for the first time. We are excited to partner with Sony Music, Raindog Films, and CNN Films on this nationwide theatrical release,” said Nick Savva , general manager of Giant Pictures.

What We’ll See In The Film

The film will include more than 40 years of archival footage of the GRAMMY-winning entertainer, along with new interviews from some of his musical peers, including Roberta Flack, Mariah Carey, Richard Marx, Dionne Warwick, and Jamie Foxx.

Foxx, who serves as a producer for the film, shared about how Vandross’ music impacted him… specifically with his love life.

“Back in the day, if you wanted to fall in love, you let Luther do the work for you,” he said. “So I would put the phone up to the radio — and what’s crazy is you had to wait for it to come on the radio.”

He continued, “So I would put the phone up to the radio and say, ‘This is what I want to tell you.’”

The film will feature Vandross getting his start by crashing David Bowie’s Young Americans recording session and becoming an in-demand backup vocalist for artists like Aretha Franklin, Chic, and Barbara Streisand. Of course, this led to his breakout solo hit, 1981’s “Never Too Much,” beginning an illustrious career.

In an interview for PEOPLE Magazine celebrating Black Music Month, Vandross’ niece, Seveda Williams, expressed how she wants fans to see her uncle.

“He was singing up to the last minute,” she said. “I hope people see him as human, a man who had a great career, but a man who lived a life.”
