Cooking Italiano: Ahts a speecy – a spicy meata-bawla
Well, now that I shared the EZ-PZ recipes, it’s time to graduate to something a little more complex…but still simple…Just follow the directions. Meatballs and Gravy! Here’s a little fun fact: Did you know when it comes to Italian cooking that a Sauce becomes Gravy once meat is cooked into it? That’s right. And this recipe is something that can be used in so many ways, appetizer, sandwiches, main dish, along with pasta (am I repeating myself?). When it comes to making meatballs, so many will either fry them, which makes them hard or bake them, where they will lose the flavor from the fats and juices. I Poach them. What this does is infuse the flavor of the meat into the sauce and the sauce into the meat. This recipe is a difficult one for me to share only because I have always done this by sight and taste and never measured. So, here goes….

Waccamaw All-Conference: Girls Basketball
BLADEN COUNTY-The East Bladen Lady Eagles had four of their own selected to the All-Conference Team for stellar seasons in the Waccamaw Conference–senior guard Zoe Smith, junior guard Laila Smith, junior guard Ivonna “NeNe” Ward and sophomore guard Ariel Cromartie. The Waccamaw Player of the Year award was split between Ward and Whiteville junior guard Elayzia Dawson. Ward is a dynamic guard and she displayed her talent on a nightly basis for the Lady Eagles.
Waccamaw All-Conference Boys Basketball
BLADEN COUNTY – The East Bladen Eagles senior guard Lee Barnes and junior guard Dominick Collins make the Waccamaw All-Conference team. Barnes was known to hit daggers from the three-point line and his 11.3 ppg was enough to earn him a spot on the All-Conference list. He drained 70 three-pointers last season and he hit eight three-point baskets in a win against Whiteville on the Eagles Senior Night.
East Bladen Stays Perfect
ELIZABETHTOWN – The East Bladen Lady Eagles stay perfect in conference play after defeating the Pender Patriots for a 2-nil victory in a Waccamaw clash on Wednesday. The Lady Eagles got both their goals from senior midfielder Heidi Rebollar to seal their second straight victory against Pender. Rebollar opened the scoring just before the ref blew his halftime whistle and she fully pushed momentum in the host’s favor with a goal in the first minutes of the second half.
West Bladen’s Gustafson Takes 2nd Place
LUMBER RIDGE – The Midway Raiders claim first place in the team competition with a total of 318 to win another SAC 6 Golf match. West Bladen scored 340 to claim second place, Clinton finished in third place with a score of 355, Fairmont took fourth place with a score of 385 and St. Pauls finished fifth place. Midway’s Dakota Bedard claimed first place in the individual competition with a score of 78.
BOC Budget Meeting
ELIZABETHTOWN – The Bladen County Board of Commissioners met for their second meeting of the month of March, where they received brief updates from Bladen Community College and approved budgets for local mapping. BCCC administrative members, alongside Dr. Amanda Lee took the time to thank the BOC for their support and they outlined some things that are going on around the campus.
West Bladen Holds On for the Victory
BLADENBORO – The West Bladen Lady Knights defeated the Clinton Darkhorses’ for a 7-5 victory in a SAC 6 clash on Tuesday. West Bladen’s lineup heated up in their half of the second inning with three runs scored enroute to their first win of the season. Senior Gracie Faircloth went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs to lead the Lady Knights in slugging. The Darkhorses’ struggled to get on base until sophomore Emory Johnson provided a lifeline in the sixth inning by batting in three runs.

Fifty years ago this week, these ads and this story ran in the Bladen Journal. Before we reported everything, including the mundane items of the day on the internet, they did it in the newspaper.
