Elks girls hockey falls to Blaine 2-1 as season ends

The Elk River girls hockey team’s 2023-24 season ended on Thursday, Feb. 8, as Blaine defeated the Elks 2-1 in the Section 8-2A quarterfinal at Fogerty Arena in Blaine. Sophomore defender Bella Doll scored Elk River’s only goal of the game on the power play in the second period. Bengals freshman forward Abbey Costa scored the game-winning goal in the third period. Elks senior goalie Addi Brandt made 29 saves on 31 shots in her final high school hockey game. The Elks finished the season with a record of 7-18-1.

The Elks graduate 12 seniors from this year’s roster: Brandt, defenders Annelie Amme-Keller, Carly Humphrey, Lauren Kammann and Sarah Leaser, and forwards Chloe Acker, Dani Henrichsen, Maja Hjort, Lexi Jimenez, Sommer Peterson, Ella Seidel and Kaila Swart.

The Elks haven’t qualified for the Class 2A state tournament since 2011 and won the program’s lone state championship 20 years ago in 2004.

Blaine lost to Grand Rapids-Greenway 3-2 in the Section 8-2A semifinal on Saturday, Feb. 10.
