BATON ROUGE - Teachers from Iberville Parish, Ascension Parish and the Zachary Community School District are amongst the finalists for Louisiana's New Teacher of the Year. Ashlie Duplessis, an English teacher at Bluff Ridge Primary, Olivia Landry, a social studies teacher at MSA West Academy and Baxton Michel, a math teacher at Zachary High School, all finished as finalists for the Louisiana New Teacher of the Year award.

11-year Lafayette police officer killed in Jeanerette standoff started in junior police academy
A 35-year-old officer with the Lafayette Police Department suffered fatal injuries Thursday during a hostage standoff in Jeanerette. Senior Cpl. Segus Jolivette, a SWAT team member, and another officer were shot when a barricaded suspect opened fire on officers attempting to serve several warrants. Two officers were hit by shrapnel. Those injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
