West Garfield Park CTA Training Center Plan Approved By City Council
WEST GARFIELD PARK — A new training and control center in West Garfield Park for Chicago Transit Authority bus and train drivers won key City Council approval Wednesday. The vacant land at 335-375 N. Pulaski Road will be converted into a three-story training and control center that will “contain general office space, classrooms and training spaces, and a control center,” according to a presentation at the Plan Commission.

CITY HALL — Chicago’s default speed limit could be lowered to 25 mph as part of an effort to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries. Ald. Daniel La Spata (1st) introduced a series of measures to City Council on Wednesday which he said were aimed at bolstering Chicago’s ongoing Vision Zero action plan to eliminate all traffic deaths citywide.

DePaul Alumnus And Faculty Member Reunited With Father’s Purple Heart
LINCOLN PARK — The original Purple Heart of a World War II veteran and DePaul University alumnus was recently returned to his family a decade after he died. Jerome Even was at Pearl Harbor on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, when Japanese pilots attacked the U.S. military base in Oahu, Hawaii. Even was one of over 1,100 soldiers wounded that day. More than 2,400 soldiers were killed during the surprise attack.
Edison Park Grocery Store At Former Happy Foods Could Open This Year
EDISON PARK — The grocery store and cafe filling the closed Happy Foods in Edison Park could open before the end of the year, the owner said. EP Market is taking over the space at 6783 N. Northwest Highway, which has sat empty for almost two years. The family-owned market will include a cafe, bakery and taqueria, co-owner Eduardo Haro said. AUSTIN — The city has secured another $5 million to help West Side neighbors still recovering from flood damage caused by last summer’s storms. The Flood Assistance Repair Program for 2024 will help up to 200 homeowners — primarily older people — living in single-family or one- to two-unit properties on the West Side. Mayor Brandon Johnson and officials with the Chicago Department of Housing announced the funding Tuesday.

UChicago Hospital Service Workers Go On Strike
HYDE PARK — More than 100 union tradespeople, supply chain workers and other employees at the University of Chicago Medical Center are on strike this week. SEIU Local 73 — which represents workers such as painters, carpenters, building engineers, grounds crews and supply chain specialists at the Hyde Park medical center — announced the strike Sunday night. The workers have been negotiating for a new contract since December. Their last agreement expired in February.
