In an urgent effort to address the escalating opioid crisis affecting communities across the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have collaborated to produce a powerful documentary titled Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict. The film, which was unveiled during a special screening at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., aims to educate students and young adults about the devastating effects of opioid addiction.

The 45-minute documentary delivers a raw and unfiltered look into the lives of individuals who have struggled with opioid addiction, including harrowing accounts from former addicts and heartbroken families who have lost loved ones to overdose. The title, Chasing the Dragon, refers to the relentless and ultimately futile pursuit of the original high that drives many into a cycle of addiction and despair.

A Crisis Impacting All Segments of Society

The opioid epidemic has swept across the nation, claiming tens of thousands of lives each year. Particularly alarming is the increasing number of young people who are falling victim to this crisis. The documentary features stories like that of Katrina, a former business executive who became addicted to painkillers, and whose daughter tragically died from an overdose. It also highlights Matt, who began using drugs at age 11 and turned to heroin at 15, and Trish, who lost her honor roll student daughter, Cierra, to a heroin overdose.

FBI Director James Comey stressed the importance of the film, stating, “This film may be difficult to watch, but we hope it educates our students and young adults about the tragic consequences that come with abusing these drugs and that it will cause people to think twice before becoming its next victim.” Similarly, Acting DEA Administrator Chuck Rosenberg underscored the severity of the situation, calling the documentary a potential "wake-up call" for the public.

    Educational and Preventative Tool

Chasing the Dragon not only shares personal stories but also provides insights from medical professionals and law enforcement officers who witness the devastating impact of opioid addiction firsthand. The documentary addresses critical topics such as the rapid onset of addiction, the transition from prescription opioids to heroin due to cost, the painful process of withdrawal, and the deep ties between addiction and crime.

This documentary is part of a broader strategy by the FBI and DEA to raise awareness about the dangers of opioid abuse and to prevent young people from falling into addiction. The film is available for viewing and downloading on the FBI’s website, and copies can be obtained through local FBI or DEA field offices.

As the opioid epidemic continues to ravage communities, initiatives like Chasing the Dragon are essential tools in the fight against addiction. By educating young people about the grim realities of opioid abuse, the FBI and DEA hope to stem the tide of this crisis and save lives before it’s too late
