Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center receives $1.49 million grant to continue Indiana SANE Training Project
Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC), hosted by the University of Southern Indiana, has received $1.49 million in federal funding distributed over the next three years from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to continue the Indiana SANE Training Project. The project provides advanced nursing education statewide to increase the number of forensic nurses, also known as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs). SANEs are specifically trained to provide evidence-based, trauma-informed medical care to victims of sexual assault or abuse and to ensure specimens are collected appropriately.
United Leasing & Finance Donates $1.5MM to Community Charities
United Leasing & Finance plans to support several area charities in Southwest Indiana, as it does on an annual basis. The pledges and gifts total $1.5 million and target early childhood and higher education, as well as organizations supporting youth health. These funds are in addition to the charitable support provided each year as a result of the PGA’s Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance, now in its 13th year. More than $2.5 million in charitable giving has been provided through the golf tournament sponsorship.

Mother-son duo arrested for breaking into apartment, beating man with tire iron
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A Bedford man and his mother are in jail for allegedly kicking down a door to a man’s Bloomington apartment and beating him with a tire iron. Phillip Magness Jr., 38, of Bedford and Jamie Staten, 56, of Farmersburg, both face charges of burglary with a deadly weapon (a Level 2 felony), battery with a deadly weapon (a level 5 felony), possession of meth (a level 6 felony), and criminal mischief (a class B misdemeanor).
