It’s rare when a member of the gallery gets more attention than the competitors at a golf tournament, but that’s the case this week at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township (July 22-27).

The club is hosting the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, the first in a series of major USGA events to be played at Oakland Hills in the coming decades, and golf legend Tiger Woods is on the property watching his son, Charlie, compete against 263 other players.

The event is free and ticketless but fans will need to park in one of three remote lots and take shuttles to the golf course. Lots are at the following locations:

    • 20500 Civic Center Dr., Southfield
    • 25800 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield
    • 4200 Andover Road, Bloomfield Township

“We’re thrilled to partner with Oakland Hills and its great staff to conduct golf’s premier junior championship,” says Rob Doone, director of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. “The renovated South Course is ready to be showcased to the world, and we can’t wait to see the passion and energy that the great golf fans of Michigan bring to the championship.”

Upon arriving to the championship grounds, fans will enjoy a minimal ropes experience and the ability to closely follow players during their rounds. A central concession stand near the South No. 1 fairway will serve food and beverages throughout the week, supported by numerous local food trucks, including Little Caesars, The Pita Post, and Ray’s Ice Cream.

Attendees also will be welcomed into the club’s interim Golf Shop facility, featuring a wide selection of championship merchandise. Fans will find tee times and live scoring available on usga.org and the official USGA app.

“Oakland Hills is thrilled to welcome thousands of golf fans from across the region back to our historic grounds,” says Jeff Judge, championship chair for Oakland Hills. “The passion for golf is unescapable in Michigan, and we look forward to attendees having an unforgettable experience seeing the South Course in its post-renovation championship debut.”

In the background of the U.S. Junior Amateur is the ongoing construction of the new Oakland Hills clubhouse, which was destroyed by fire in February 2022.

The clubhouse’s steel framework was topped out during a July 9 ceremony attended by members and contractors. “It’s truly a spectacular feat by the team,” says Mark Bowman, the club’s second vice president, regarding the progress made since breaking ground in late December 2023.

“Our hopes and excitement have been raised,” he says. Construction of the clubhouse is on schedule, with an anticipated opening in the first half of 2026.

“We look forward to seeing many of the competitors in this year’s U.S. Junior Amateur walk the hallways of our future clubhouse when the U.S. Open returns in 2034,” says K. Dino Kostopoulos, president of Oakland Hills.

The Detroit Sports Commission, which markets and sells metro Detroit as a premier destination for regional, national, and international amateur sporting events, states the U.S. Junior Amateur is another economic generator. The Commission is a not-for-profit charitable organization, and a subsidiary of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau in Detroit.

“The 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills is just the latest in a series exciting sporting events hosted in Detroit this year, including the NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional, the record-setting 2024 NFL Draft, Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, Rocket Mortgage Classic, BMX Stars & Stripes, and the USBC Junior Gold Championships,” says Dave Beachnau, executive director of the Detroit Sports Commission.

“We’re thrilled to welcome golf fans to the region and invite them to enjoy all that southeast Detroit has to offer as they to take in the competition at the historic Oakland Hills Country Club, one of the most storied golf courses in the world.”
