Records are meant to be broken.

Sometimes it can take 31 years. Sometimes, just six days.

Michelle Nerison’s Kenyon-Wanamingo school record time in the 200-meter dash of 26.48 seconds stood tall for 31 years. Current Kenyon-Wanamingo/Goodhue co-op senior speedster Hayley Lentsch, from K-W, ran 26.34 May 11 at the Gopher Conference Championships.

Temperatures were warm and conditions conducive for running that day in Mapleton. The thermometer went higher at K-W/G’s final regular season meet at the Triton Invitational May 17 in Dodge Center. Temperatures creeped into the 80s, allowing for quick twitch muscles to warm easily.

Lentsch had plenty of spring in her step to take an ax to her old record by clocking 25.84. That blew away the field, with St. Peter sophomore Macy Portner in second at 27.87 and Byron freshman Taimani Evjen at 28.25. It was also a personal record for Evjen, per athletic.net.

Lentsch also won long jump by a foot, soaring 16 feet, 6 inches. Hayfield junior Breanna Subbert (15-6) took second, followed by a PR by Byron junior Alexa Schrooten (15-2).

K-W/G girls have fared well both in sprints and medium distance races. Sophomore Audrey Haugen has taken the mantle on the latter, excelling in the 800 and 1,600.

At Triton, Haugen won the 1,600 with a PR of 5:24.28. Blooming Prairie freshman Gloria Hernandez was second at 5:41.78, followed by St. Peter eighth-grader Lucia Penner at 5:46.44.

Haugen was second in the 800 at 2:26.94. St. Peter sophomore Keira Freidrich won at 2:16.56. Rochester Lourdes freshman Olivia Timbers took third with a PR of 2:27.88.

Top-eight finishers for the girls continued with junior Carmen Nerison placing seventh in the 300 hurdles with a season record of 54.92.

The 800 relay team of freshman Lila Huschle, sophomore Holly Carlstrom, seventh-grader Talia Johnson and seventh-grader Quinnly Hanson took fourth at 2:00.17, narrowly ousting Byron in fifth at 2:00.45.

The 400 relay team of seventh-grader Naomi Edwards, seventh-grader Stella Haugen, sophomore Elsie Braaten and Hanson took sixth at 58.98.

Carlstrom took seventh in the high jump at 4-6.

    BOYS CLAIM EVENT TITLE

The K-W/G boys had one event win courtesy of senior Grant Reed. The Goodhue student clocked a time of 11.39 seconds in the 100-meter dash to oust an otherwise all-Byron top five. Junior Benjamin Zimmerman was second at 11.53 and junior Brayden Olson next at 11.93.

It was a light event workload day for several K-W/G athletes with the postseason looming next week. Reed was among them, competing in just two events. He was the anchor to the 800 relay team that took second place with a time of 1:39.1. Junior Kyle Brogger, senior Logan Carroll and freshman Colten Lohman were the first three legs. St. Peter won at 1:30.61 and Blooming Prairie was third at 1:42.48.

Junior Masyn Hanson took silver in both the 110 and 300 hurdles. In the first, he clocked a PR of 17.81. St. Peter senior Corbin Herron was first 14.39 and Byron sophomore Lucas McClean set a PR for third at 18.4, followed by K-W/G junior Asher Moore at 19.39.

In the 300, Herron won at 41.01 ahead of Hanson (44.54) and a PR by Lourdes senior Benjamin Beckenbaugh (44.79).

Top-eight finishes for the boys continued with sophomore Andre Cortez taking third in the 400 at 56.88, trailing Byron sophomore Carson Heimer (52.17) and a PR by Triton junior Miguel Martinez (55.17).

Cortez’ PR of 2:23.53 in the 800 was good for fifth.

K-W/G freshman Seth Aldorfer taking seventh in the triple jump (33-8). Hanson was seventh in long jump at 17-2.

    UP NEXT

K-W/G next competes at the Class 1A, Section 1, Subsection 3 meet May 22 at Pine Island Elementary School. Competing teams are K-W/G, Cannon Falls, Lake City, Medford, Pine Island, Randolph, Wabasha-Kellogg and Zumbrota-Mazeppa. Field events begin at 4 p.m. and track events at 4:45. Top four finishers per event, including relays, advance to the section meet May 28 and 30 at Triton High School.
