FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Homestead High School graduate and former Indiana University outfielder Carter Mathison is heading to the Philadelphia Phillies organization, as the slugger was drafted with the 162nd overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Mathison is coming off his junior season for the Hoosiers. A sweet-swinging lefty, the Fort Wayne native hit .260 with 13 home runs and 44 RBI. His best season in college came in 2022, when he set the Indiana University freshman record with 19 home runs.

Despite playing just three seasons in Bloomington, Mathison is sixth all-time at I.U. with 42 career home runs, two ahead of current MLB star Kyle Schwarber.

In three seasons at I.U. Mathison hit .281 with 42 doubles, 42 home runs, 151 RBI, and 16 stolen bases.

As a senior at Homestead in 2021, Mathison was named the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Mr. Baseball. He hit .515 as a senior for the Spartans, leading the state in both home runs (16) and runs scored (64) while coming in second with 53 RBI. He was also 3-0 on the mound with a 1.43 ERA.
