Brennan Center receives $30 million for Supreme Court reform
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law has announced a $30 million commitment from Jim Kohlberg in support of reform at the U.S. Supreme Court. The gift will establish the Kohlberg Center on the U.S. Supreme Court, the first named unit within the Brennan Center, a nonpartisan law and policy institute dedicated to democracy and justice issues. The Kohlberg Center will use the investment to support research, public education, and policy advocacy for changes such as Supreme Court term limits and ethics reform. In addition, the center will convene scholars, hold public symposia, publish policy reports and research, and advance proposals. According to recent polls, Supreme Court approval ratings have hit near-record lows.

Former Nassau County Fire Service Academy Employee Indicted for Defrauding Workers’ Compensation
Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a former employee of the Nassau County Fire Service Academy was indicted on Grand Larceny, Falsifying Business Records, and Fraudulent Practices of the Workers’ Compensation Law for fraudulently receiving more than $16,000 of workers’ compensation benefits. The defendant continued to volunteer as a firefighter in Massapequa and maintained other employment cleaning a local church and working at a tax preparation office despite allegedly submitting documentation stating that she was not working while she collected the benefits.
