BLUEFIELD, VA (WVNS) – The air quality around the country has drastically declined due to wildfires.

The flames themselves are deadly, and the smoke hovering over the Mountain State can cause issues of its own.

Is it allergies or illness? How you can tell the difference

Dr. Donald Asbury is an Allergist at Allergy and Asthma Center of Bluefield. He says that there are a number of symptoms that can be caused by the smoke.

“You still need to get outdoors. When you do go, be cautious with it. Perhaps think of wearing a mask if you are going to be out longer than expected. It is an irritant that can cause issues to the young and the old with health conditions,” said Dr. Asbury.

A mystery illness is spreading in dogs. Can your cat catch it, too?

Air quality advisories have been set for parts of the U.S and Canada. The air quality so far in the Mountain State has not been bad enough to warrant an advisory.

To stay safe, air quality specialists recommend citizens start by learning about air quality conditions and forecasts in their area.
