Bluefield State, a public HBCU located in Bluefield, West Virginia is coming off a challenging 1-9 season. Big Blue is gearing up for a fresh start under NFL Veteran and new head coach Davon Morgan. The team will open their season against CIAA rival Winston-Salem State at Mitchell Stadium on August 31st.

Davon Morgan Takes Charge of Bluefield State

NFL veteran Davon Morgan has been appointed head coach of Bluefield State, bringing a new vision to the HBCU football program. Morgan, who gained valuable coaching insights from figures like Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech and during his time in the NFL, sees this role as a prime opportunity. “This job was a chance to give this team an identity. I think these guys are excited, and we’re just ready to go,” Morgan stated.

    Strategic Recruitment and Roster Changes

Under Morgan’s leadership, Bluefield State has made significant roster improvements. Despite being hired in March of 2024, Morgan managed to secure some crucial recruits, including two offensive linemen from the University of Marshall, a running back from the University of Maryland, another from Cal Berkeley, a cornerback from Alabama, and a linebacker from FIU. “The ink ain’t dry on some of these signings yet, so I can’t say too much, but it’s going to be exciting to watch,” Morgan remarked.

    Key Returnees: Teal and Campbell

Morgan’s strategy also includes leveraging key returning players. Quarterback Isaiah Teal , named CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023, and safety Justin Campbell , who earned second-team All-CIAA honors, are pivotal to the team’s success. Morgan emphasized that proving their worth is crucial, not just to the league but to themselves.

    Looking Forward to the Season

The season opener against Winston-Salem State will be a significant test for Bluefield State under Morgan’s leadership. The team aims to make an impact in CIAA football and establish a winning presence. Morgan, inspired by successful HBCU coaches, hopes to elevate the program’s status. “I want to model my program after these successful coaches. One day, I hope my name can be mentioned alongside the greats like Joe Taylor,” he said.

With a renewed focus and strategic changes, Bluefield State is ready to turn a new chapter in its football history.

As coach Morgan puts it, “The rent is due when Bluefield State comes to town.”
