Nelson : County Treasurer Announces Retirement After 30+ Years Service
“After more than three decades of commitment to the citizens of Nelson County, Angela Hicks will retire as Nelson County Treasurer effective August 1, 2024. She was elected Nelson County Treasurer in November 2011. Prior to her career as Treasurer, Hicks served Nelson County in various roles within the county government. In 1990 she was employed as a counselor for the county’s summer recreation program. While continuing to serve in this capacity for the next two summers, she also worked part-time/as-needed for the Commissioner of Revenue.
VSP Investigating Fatal Crash in Nelson County
“Virginia State Police is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Friday (May 10, 2024) at 10:30 a.m. on Piedmont Road in Nelson County. A 2000 Honda CR-V was driving northbound on Piedmont Road, near its intersection with Galilee Road, when the vehicle crossed the center line, ran off the road to the left, struck a tree, and overturned.

Good Night Marilyn, Rest In Peace My Friend
I met Marilyn Shifflett of Nellysford many years ago. I can’t tell you exactly when, but it’s been over 10 of the 20 years we’ve lived here permanently. I didn’t really get to know Marilyn and become closer to her until the looming threat of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) became a very real threat to majestic mountains of Nelson County. You can’t think about the ACP and the opposition to it without thinking of Marilyn Shifflett. She was a tireless crusader against the pipeline, and in the end, in great part to her efforts, Dominion finally gave up and pulled the plug on the ACP.
NELSON : Afton : VSP Investigating Single-Vehicle Fatal Crash
“Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred at 6:40 p.m. Sunday (May 5, 2024) on eastbound Afton Mountain Road in Nelson County. A 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling east on Afton Mountain Road near Williams Creek Lane when it ran off the right side of the road. The vehicle continued into a ditch where it struck a culvert and overturned.

“ The privately owned, twin-engine 1975 Rockwell Aero Commander 690A was being piloted by John W. Latham, 63, of Haymarket, Va.. Neither Latham nor his passenger, Niiben C.A. Ayivorh, 73, of Burke, Va., survived the crash. Their remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.
Nelson Sheriff & Agencies Make Significant Drug Arrest / Seizure
“The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, along with assistance from the Virginia State Police Interstate Criminal Enforcement Unit and the 3A Regional Drug and Gang Task Force, have been actively investigating multiple individuals for the distribution of Fentanyl, Methamphetamine, and Cocaine in the Central Virginia area. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that one individual, Mr. Demarcus Brown, was traveling out of the area to purchase large quantities of illegal narcotics before transporting these narcotics back into the Commonwealth of Virginia. On May1, 2024, these investigative efforts resulted in a traffic stop in Nelson County, Virginia. As a result of this traffic stop, multiple Search Warrants were obtained and executed in the Greater-Charlottesville, Virginia, area.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a Citizen Information Meeting concerning proposed improvements to the Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway) corridor in Augusta County. The open-house meeting will take place Wednesday, May 15, 2024, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Dairy Barn Lecture Hall at the Frontier Culture Museum, 1290 Richmond Avenue, Staunton, VA 24401.

Suspect Dies After Standoff In I-64 Police Shooting – Identity Released
We broke this story in this post (click here) on Wednesday evening. A man was in a standoff with police in the middle of I-64 eastbound after a pursuit out of Waynesboro. Thursday afternoon VSP released the name of the suspect and said he eventually died at UVA in Charlottesville.

The adult male victim who was shot was transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
