Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Field Office in Richmond, Vermont, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia announced that the man responsible for the brutal murders of Laura “Lollie” Winans and her partner Julianne “Julie” Williams has been identified nearly three decades after the women’s bodies were discovered in Shenandoah National Park. New testing of DNA submitted to the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) found a positive match to Walter Leo Jackson Senior, a convicted serial rapist who died in prison in March 2018 at 70 years old.

Trail Access to North Carolina’s Catawba Falls Reopens with Safety Improvements
Two weeks ago, North Carolina’s popular Catawba Falls Trail reopened with new features meant to improve safety and accessibility. The trail, located in the Old Fort area of Pisgah National Forest, is known for its iconic waterfall views of up to 205 feet. But the scenic cascade is also known for drawing big crowds—an estimated 10,000 visitors per week, according to news reports—and two years ago officials decided to close the trail to make safety improvements after numerous incidents that resulted in hiker injuries and fatalities.

Highlighted by the world-famous Appalachian Trail, we have miles of scenic hiking and biking trails to explore. The C&O Canal towpath is a smooth, level trail, perfect for hiking or biking. From the C&O Canal Towpath, long-distance hikers and bicyclists can connect to the Great Allegheny Passage, a combined rails-to-trails route that spans 335 miles. Hikers can also follow part of the 2,200-mile-long Appalachian Trail, with its midpoint at Harpers Ferry. The view of Harpers Ferry and the Shenandoah Valley is exceptional from the overlook on the Maryland Heights Trail. These and dozens of other trails run throughout the county.
