Charges filed in fatal Wichita shooting
A Wichita man has been charged with second degree murder in a shooting that happened earlier this week at an east side apartment. The charge was filed against 22-year-old Peter McKinney, and his bond was set at $500,000. His next court appearance was scheduled for July 15th. A 50-year-old man who was arrested with McKinney has not been charged at this time, and the District Attorney’s Office said more investigation will be needed.

Police DUI crash into house put Kansas man in jail
COWLEY COUNTY— A Kansas man was arrested after a crash into a home just before 10p.m. Wednesday in Cowley County. According to Arkansas City Police, a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Anthony Perez-Hernandez had gone through the stop sign at the intersection of North 2nd Streed and Kansas Avenue in Arkansas City and collided with the home in the 200 Block of W. Kansas Avenue.

Lenexa wants to collect 1,000 pounds of used plastic bags to make into bench
The city of Lenexa is looking to get a new public bench through unconventional means — by recycling more than 1,000 pounds of plastic bags. Taking a cue from neighboring cities like Merriam, the city has launched a year-long project where it ask residents to donate plastic bags at three locations in hopes of reaching the magic number of 1,000 pounds, enough to craft a bench.

Wichita hospital warns of increasing disease cases with children
Pediatricians in the Ascension Medical Group are reporting an increase in cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HMFD) and mononucleosis among children in the Wichita area. HFMD and mono are highly contagious and they are often spread through close contact, including sharing drinks, utensils and other personal items. HMFD mainly affects children under the age of 5, causing fever, sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet. Mono is more common in adolescents and young adults, with the symptoms including fever, sore throat, and fatigue.
