BLUFF CITY, Tenn. (WJHL)—The Town of Bluff City has approved its budget for the next fiscal year. Property taxes will not increase; however, garbage collection fees and water and sewer rates will.

According to a social media post by Bluff City Mayor Jeff Broyles, the Board of Supervisors passed the balanced budget Tuesday night.

“Due to the present economic conditions, and the skyrocketing cost of supplies, we were forced to increase both the water and sewer rates five percent (5%) in order to cover our operating expenses,” the post states.

Broyles went on to say that in addition to the 5% water/sewer rate hike, garbage collection fees in the town will be increased to $22 a month. Broyles noted the fee was still below that of the county and private trash collection services.

“The average resident inside the town that has both water and sewer services will see an increase of about less than $4,” he said. “The customer outside that has only water, which is the majority of those outside the town, will see an increase of less than $4 or so.”

He said the increase allows these services to operate adequately and keeps the town in line with state regulations.

“One, we have to pay bills. Two, we have, according to our charter, we have to continue to provide services to our citizens. And then lastly, three state law mandates that we charge a rate which will allow us to operate.”

Broyles noted in his post’s comments that online bill-paying services will be available in the town “soon.”

The entire statement posted by Mayor Broyles can be found below:

Good morning from your Mayor’s desk,

Last evening, our Board passed a balanced budget for the ensuing year, and I am proud to report without a property tax increase.

Due to the present economic conditions, and the skyrocketing cost of supplies, we were forced to increase both the water and sewer rates five percent (5%) in order to cover our operating expenses. This, in obedience to our own Charter, and applicable State laws.

In regard to residential garbage services, the economy again is forcing change. Increases in labor costs and disposal surcharges demand that we increase our rate per service. Henceforth, the monthly rate for residential garbage service is Twenty Two Dollars ($22.00) per month, still far below the County and private rates.
