Behind a Shallow Moat: All Hail the Radical King of Hampden’s Craft Castle
BREAKING NEWS: The Craft Castle isn’t actually a castle. It is, in fact, a rowhouse, and it’s celebrating its first anniversary in October. Some might call the Hampden arts and craft studio a diamond in the rough. Or a hidden gem, located on The Avenue, between a hair boutique and a vintage shop. To the naked eye, the Castle is a watering hole for stickers, stamps, and watercolors (for the Lumieres and Cogsworths of arts and crafts). But, beneath the surface, it’s so much more.

Kim Rice Finds Her Life’s Work in Baltimore
Kim Rice had been making artwork dealing with the white race for years before she realized that her father’s ancestors had been slavers. Two years into the Trump presidency, she was working on a piece that placed cut-outs of the antebellum Virginia Slave Codes over the mouths of the Founding Fathers.
How To Run At the End of the World
It is the height of marathon training season and if you’ve walked past R. House in Remington during a recent, steamy Monday twilight, you’ve probably noticed an enormous swell of runners pooling around the entrance. It might be a bit overwhelming, this cacophony of excited banter, glistening skin, ponytails, and brightly colored sneakers.

The New/Next Film Festival afterparty featured a performance by Baltimore Club headliners TT the Artist and Dapper Dan Midas Friday night at Metro Gallery. The Crow’s Nest Lands on Mulberry Street
My little corner of the Bromo Arts District is characterized as much by international comings-and-goings as it is by its arts district designation. The Cantonese signs in the storefronts of old Chinatown might be replaced by Arabic or Amharic overnight. So when artist Lydia Petit, my friend and the founder of Platform Arts Center, moved to London a few years ago and put the stately townhouse up for sale, I wondered who my new neighbor might be, and what fresh perspectives they’d bring to the neighborhood.
And the 2023 Sondheim Award Winner is …
It’s hard to believe that the Janet & Walter Sondheim Prize is now in its 18th year of existence. The first Sondheim Exhibition was hosted in MICA’s Meyerhoff galleries during Artscape in 2006; multidisciplinary sculpture and performance artist Laure Drogoul was the first winner of the then-$25,000 prize, which at the time seemed astronomical in size, the first of its kind in Baltimore. Fast forward eighteen years and there are many more fellowships, grants, and opportunities to exhibit in museums for regional living artists, a testament to the influence of this award.

Baltimore’s New/Next Film Festival Offers an Eclectic Array of Screenings
“Baltimore is a city with an immensely diverse array of artists and musicians from different backgrounds, with different perspectives,” says Sam Sessa, Director of Community Events for WYPR and WTMD and co-founder of the New/Next Film Festival with Eric Allen Hatch. “What unites them is a willingness to experiment—to push and pull and break new ground. The first question is never how much, but how far.” On the cusp of Baltimore’s newest film festival, Sessa explains that he and Hatch want to honor that spirit with New/Next, a brand-new film festival which occurs August 18 – 20 at The Charles Theater and surrounding areas.
