The Skeletons of Joyce J. Scott
When we encounter narratives of gender and racial violence in Scott’s work, the shock is manifold; we witness depictions of massive societal calamity rendered in such tiny beads, and, in the case of many of the works, fashioned to be worn on the body.
BmoreArt releases Issue 17: Transformation
A caterpillar’s job is to be ravenous. Some eat so much that they grow to 3000 times their hatch size in two weeks. When their skin will not allow them to grow any more, they find a quiet place to wriggle out of it and surrender to the chrysalis waiting underneath.

Navigating Our Brave New Art World
I did it. I finally did it. And I’m glad my first time was in the context of art. I’m not a gamer, have never played Wii, don’t give a damn about Pokémon Go, or any other such things. I’m not a Neo-Luddite, just wary of “the new” in general. But I had my first encounters with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)—I didn’t really understand the difference until today—and feel good that they were experienced in the form of art.

Touch of Grey: The 149th Preakness Stakes in Photos
My favorite thing about The Preakness in Baltimore, besides the swagger and style, are the horses’ names. This year, Seize the Grey (15-1 odds) foisted a major upset on Mystik Dan (5-2), taking away chances for a Triple Crown victory. Other odd and evocative horse names this year include Mugatu (20-1), Uncle Heavy (20-1), Catching Freedom (6-1), Just Steel (15-1), and Tuscan Gold (8-1).
