Art AND: Dereck Stafford Mangus
Dereck Stafford Mangus thinks you should take a break. Artists are constantly advised to produce—to get in the studio and make, even if they don’t feel like it. The wisdom is that, like working out at the gym, the routine of creation is what matters and creativity is a muscle to be flexed and stretched daily, and from that great work will come. Mangus sees it differently, explaining that “[under] capitalism, we are just trying to mass produce to keep up with the market” which is additionally challenging since artists make things by hand, a process that is inherently laborious and slower-paced than a machine’s.
Amy Cavanaugh: Ten Years of Service at Maryland Art Place
When one sees Amy Cavanaugh and her infectious smile greeting visitors at Maryland Art Place’s spotless galleries, it’s not easy to picture her playing in bands at the infamously grungy punk mecca CBGB. But when we look at Cavanaugh’s journey from classically-trained cellist to indie rocker to community organizer to arts administrator, we get a richer picture of one of Baltimore’s hardest working cultural leaders.

‘Gold Rush’ Documents the Social and Ecological Impact of Mining on Indigenous Lands
Thirty minutes from the Canadian border, an organic farm in Pembroke, Maine, harvests blueberries, cranberries, and mushrooms from its orchards. The Smithereen Farm cultivates the land, but it also works to replenish its acres to preserve natural ecosystems. Underneath this biodiverse landscape, the cellar of the Smithereen farmhouse stores 20,000 core samples, cylindrical mineral extractions used by miners to assess the presence of precious metals.

We Care a Lot: Corita Kent at Goucher College
In 2015, I drove 4.5 hours to Pittsburgh to sleep on a friend’s couch so I could catch Someday is Now, Corita Kent’s show at the Warhol Museum. As I documented for this magazine, I was Pittsburgh-curious and had a grand time (although I didn’t think much of their “mission-style” burritos) dashing around to the major art spaces and spending three hours with Kent’s first survey show in over thirty years.
