Everything Old Is Renewed Again at the Walters Art Museum
“If you don’t like someone’s story, write your own,” author Chinua Achebe told the Paris Review in 1994. This philosophy is currently manifested at the Walters Art Museum, where a significant historic collection is benefitting from the energetic presence of new works by contemporary artists. How do...
Beyond Zona MACO: What We Saw During Mexico City Art Week
Remember that short-lived (2005-2006) MTV parody children’s show Wonder Showzen? I vaguely recall a running gag on the politically-incorrect (unimaginably so by today’s standards) black comedy wherein the word “Mexico” was usually whispered in a tone that was equal parts sinister and seductive. That pretty much sums up my cognitive functions every February, when the art world descends on the Valle de México like a plague of locusts in search of tempting “authenticity” to frenetically consume until all the chinampas are stripped bare of their crops.

Jesmyn Ward, Scrambled Eggs, and Why The Future Depends on Black Historical Fiction
Early this December, when my kids asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I didn’t skip a beat. “Just one singular thing,” I told them. “Breakfast with Jesmyn Ward.” Her new author photo had caught my eye on a poster at the Enoch Pratt Central Library: she was going to be featured at their next annual Booklovers’ Breakfast in February.

Playing in Museums with Pablo Helguera
Whether they self-identify as art works or not (be it Fluxus-style instruction art or something similar), games have a very creative and artistic component. They're nothing other than sets of rules, and rules can evolve and be completely reinvented.

What to See in Mexico City During Art Week (and How to Stay Sane While Seeing it)
It’s been 22 years since Zona MACO, Latin America’s largest art fair, launched in Mexico City. In the two decades since, the number of artists, galleries, collectors, satellite fairs, and tangentially-related happenings (Immersive art rave! Conceptual design pop-up! Multi-sensory experimental opera! Guided mezcal tasting/meditation experience!) in the Mexican capital has ballooned astronomically. It’s too much! There’s too much to see! To do! To taste!
The Club Car Pulls into Station North
Like the the Windup Space was to me, I hope to continue the tradition of this being a hub for artist of all disciplines and patrons of the arts to gather, share stories and experiences, dance, sweat, and create. It’s one of the many spaces in the Station North area that inspired me and gave me the opportunity to evolve as performance artist. We hope to continue that tradition.

My visit included a behind the scenes tour of daily operations and a view of winter pieces that are available now!
