Two Baltimore-based Artists Receive Creative Capital Grants
Out of just fifty Creative Capital grants awarded nationwide this cycle, for the first time ever two are going to Baltimore-based artists. The filmmaker Marnie Ellen Hertzler and mixed-media artist Jackie Milad have each received a whopping, unrestricted $50,000 for their respective projects through the 2024 “Wild Futures: Art, Culture, Impact” granting initiative. They were selected by a process of peer review out of 5,600 applicants. It’s a big deal.

The Book of Grace
Suzan-Lori Parks is best known for making dark fun of icons of American history. Her earlier acclaimed works, The America Play (1994) and Topdog/Underdog (2001), feature Black men who make livings impersonating Abraham Lincoln and encourage sideshow visitors to reenact Lincoln’s assassination. Parks argues that American history, as most of us were taught it, is something like a sideshow to the actual experience of Black Americans, as it has intended to obscure or distract from our nation’s past.
The Baltimore Met Gala II
On August 26th 2023, the newly renovated M&T Bank Exchange flooded with guests donned fabrics of every hue, in sequins, tulle, feathers, and warm smiles. For the second annual Baltimore MET Gala, the stylish elite took on this year’s theme (the four elements) and they didn’t do it lightly. You could feel the excitement in line as those waiting guessed at each other’s inspiration: earth, air, fire, and water. The outpouring of creativity was a feast for the eyes.
