The hugely anticipated BMW M5 Touring has leaked ahead of its scheduled August 15th debut. Images populated the internet early Tuesday morning, apparently leaked by a BMW dealership in Belgium before being reposted in most corners of the internet. And from where we’re sitting, the outlook is good for this superwagon.

As part of the newly created BMW Protection Driving Experience concept, 24 interested parties, including special units from the government institutions of the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary, tested BMW’s unique Protection vehicles. BMW has been offering security vehicles for over 45 years. The event saw a total participation of approximately 50 people, including BMW representatives from the mentioned countries and their authorized dealers.

In an announcement on Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that BMW is recalling 105,558 vehicles across the United States to address a potential starter motor overheating issue. This latest recall affects a variety of models, including select X5, X7, 3 Series, and 7 Series vehicles, due to concerns over an electrical overload that could cause the starter motor to overheat.

BMW is all about customization, and recent patent filings from the German Patent and Trademark Office point to their continued focus. In a patent published on August 8th, 2024, BMW has patented an invention to allow drivers configurable exterior mirrors. The patent’s description starts by essentially describing an exterior mirror as we know it today. Lights inside the mirror allow an integrated turn signal element to illuminate as needed. It goes on to explain that “the disadvantage is that there is no individualization [of the] light signature emitted by the lamp.” We’re not sure how high that ranks on the scale of automotive first world problems, but it can’t be far off from “this car’s Wi-Fi is too slow” and “these heated seats are too warm.”
