Track Review: 2025 BMW M5 (G90) – Powerful, but Heavy
The seventh-generation BMW M5 is finally here, and it’s more controversial than ever. The G90 M5 not only builds upon the equally contentious design of the 5 Series but also introduces an electrified drivetrain to the iconic business sedan. This plug-in hybrid drivetrain is arguably the biggest point of contention and will likely spark many debates among enthusiasts. Considering the size of the new M5, incorporating an electric motor makes a lot of sense, especially to mitigate the weight, which stands at 5,390 lbs (2,445 kg).
The New BMW M5 Is 1,045 Pounds Heavier Than The Old One
We knew the new M5 would be heavy from the moment BMW confirmed a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Keeping the V8 alive while adding an electric motor and a battery pack inevitably increases weight. That can be offset by using more lightweight materials in an expensive supercar. However, dipping the super sedan in carbon fiber was not a viable solution. The M5 “G90” had to remain relatively affordable. Well, compared to supercars that is.
2025 BMW M5 Electric Range And EV Top Speed Revealed
Throughout six generations, the BMW M5 has been offered with inline-six, V8, and V10 engines, but never with an electric motor. The seventh M5 is the first to adopt a plug-in hybrid setup, equipped with a 14.8-kWh battery. It feeds juice to an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic transmission. Don’t go looking for a manual because the days of three-pedal M5s are long gone. Since the engineers focused on performance rather than efficiency, you won’t be able to travel too far without firing up the combustion engine. For the US market, BMW quotes an estimated electric range of 25 miles (40 kilometers). The company’s European branch is more optimistic since the new M5 is projected to cover 43 miles (69 kilometers) on electric power.
First Look: 2025 BMW M5 in Frozen Deep Grey
The seventh-generation BMW M5 (G90) has just been unveiled, and we had the opportunity to see the car in a striking new color: Frozen Isle of Man Green. This stunning matte green is one of the new colors available for the M5. In the US, customers can choose from one solid color and ten metallic options, including Isle of Man Green and Marina Bay Blue. For those feeling adventurous, Frozen Deep Grey with a matte finish is also available. Additionally, BMW offers an impressive selection of no fewer than 150 Individual shades. For the European model, Storm Bay is an added option.
BMW G90 M5 vs. F90 M5: Photo Comparison
It seems like we were welcoming the G60 BMW 5 Series to the lineup just yesterday. But today, we get our first introduction to the BMW M variant: the G90 M5. The G90 M5 changes almost everything familiar about the “regular” G60 5 Series, but it also looks and performs radically different from the F90 M5 that it replaces. Here’s how the two compare.
2025 BMW M5 Debuts With 717 Horsepower and 25 Miles of Electric Range
The new M5 is finally here, and there’s good and bad news to share. The seventh iteration of BMW’s super sedan confirms rumors about adding power and weight. Codenamed “G90,” the Bavarian missile is a vast departure from past models by being the first to adopt a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It keeps the big ol’ V8 alive for one more generation but with a plug-in hybrid twist. It takes a page from the XM’s book by inheriting its electrified powertrain.
No New BMW 6 Series Planned; Decision on XM’s Future Still Pending
Earlier today, Automotive News published a piece discussing the potential revival of the iconic BMW 6 Series and the cancellation of a second XM project. However, our sources indicate that both claims might not reflect reality. Let’s start with the 6 Series. In 2022, we reported on BMW’s consideration of reviving the 6 Series nameplate, based on an article by Georg Kacher for WhichCar Australia. At that time, there was no definitive indication that BMW was planning a new 6 Series, and this has proven to be accurate.
BMW Secures First Approval for Combining Level 2 and Level 3 Autonomous Driving Systems
BMW has become the first carmaker to receive approval for combining both Level 2 and Level 3 autonomous driving systems in a single vehicle. The new BMW 7 Series now offers the BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2) and the BMW Personal Pilot L3 (Level 3), marking a significant step in automated driving technology. The BMW Highway Assistant is a Level 2 feature designed to enhance comfort on long-distance journeys. It allows the vehicle to operate at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph) and can be used on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. Drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods, provided they stay attentive and ready to take control if needed.
The Limited Edition BMW M3 CS Touring Will Hit the Road in 2025
Last year, we were the first to announce that BMW was developing an enhanced version of its widely admired M3 Touring. Today, we can confirm that the BMW M3 CS Touring is indeed on its way! The first prototypes of the G81 M3 CS Touring have been spotted at the Nurburgring, sporting a bit of camouflage.
McLaren-BMW Partnership to Fight the Ferrari Purosangue?
A BMW-McLaren partnership has been in the news cycle in the past, but both companies denied a joint cooperation at the time. The tide might change though. According to Carscoops, McLaren, traditionally known for its high-performance sports cars, is considering an expansion into the SUV market with a new concept referred to as the “Shared Performance” vehicle. This development aims to provide a direct competitor to Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV. During a recent press event in Europe, McLaren’s CEO, Michael Leiters, along with Piers Scott, Head of Global Communications, provided insights into the initial planning stages of this new venture.
BMW i1 and i2 Won’t Arrive Until Late 2028
Autocar UK published an article last week highlighting BMW’s plans to build two entry-level electric vehicles. The BMW i1 and i2 were rumored to arrive in 2027, according to the publication. However, our own sources say that might not be the case. Both compact EVs are not scheduled to enter production until summer-fall 2028, with the first units hitting the market a few months later.
The Key Design Changes We Would Make to the New BMW 1 Series
As a lifelong BMW enthusiast, I’ve always admired the blend of sportiness and sophistication that the brand brings to the table. However, when it comes to the new BMW 1 Series and its performance variant, the M135, I felt there was room for a little extra flair. That’s when I decided, armed with Photoshop and Procreate, to give these models a fresh, updated design that aims to build upon the original styling.
Top 5 BMWs With B58 Engines
Believe it or not, the B58 inline-six has been in production for about a decade now. It debuted in the F30 3 Series, subsequently appearing in everything from BMW SUVs to off-road-ready trucks like the Ineos Grenadier and performance icons like the Toyota Supra—and nearly every niche in between, too. The 3.0-liter mill uses a single turbocharger to generate 300+ horsepower and close to 400 pound-feet of torque. It replaced the N55 engine, which itself replaced the twin-turbo N54 engine.
This G87 BMW M2 Tuned Up With M Performance Parts
Timeless. What exactly does that word mean or infer? Is the G87 BMW M2 timeless in its design? Perhaps the definition of the word “timeless” is subjective. However, garden variety examples of “timeless” could be the traditional black and white tuxedo, a Rolex Submariner or Audrey Hepburn’s old-Hollywood glamour. This one-of-a-kind BMW M2 was created by Chris Marino, General Manager of Spokane BMW, who focused on a unique build.
1986 BMW 635 CSi Art Car Arrives At The BMW Welt
After eight years, we finally got a new BMW Art Car in 2024. The M Hybrid V8 designed by Julie Mehretu broke cover last month in Paris at Center Pompidou. If the electrified V8 race car’s special finish has whetted your appetite for Art Cars, the BMW Welt has something special on display. This week, the #6 Art Car arrived in Munich at the exhibition center for visitors to admire.
BMW M3 CS With 750 HP Is Supercar Quick On The Autobahn
The fastest and most powerful BMW M3 was not enough for the owner of this CS. They decided the sports sedan could use even more oomph. Its already potent “S58” engine now pumps out 750 hp and 880 Nm (649 lb-ft) of torque. With an extra 200 hp and 230 Nm (170 lb-ft), the four-door Competition Sport is absurdly quick.
2025 BMW X6 M Competition Pricing, Specs, Photos
Like its more traditionally shaped platform-mate, the 2025 BMW X5 M Competition, the Sports Activity Coupe version doesn’t change much for the newest model year. The 2025 BMW X6 M Competition now resides in a somewhat hotly-contested segment – coupe-shaped high-performance SUV – shared with heavy hitters like the RS Q8, Cayenne Turbo GT, and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63. Although pricing and luxuriousness vary wildly in the segment, overall, the 2025 X6 M Competition more than holds its own in the segment and could almost be considered a value, undercutting pricing from its closest rivals in Porsche and other exotic lands.
BMW X3 M50 Alpine White Poses With Matte Black Wheels
It’s only been a few days since BMW took the wraps off the new X3 and the revamped crossover has already touched down in Bulgaria. Over 250 customers, journalists, and fans of the luxury brand were invited to get up close and personal with the “G45.” The local division had the opportunity to showcase the M Performance model (X3 M50) that will be available at launch.
BMW M Is Working On Simulated Gear Shifts For Electric Cars
You need an automatic transmission to extract every last drop of performance from a sports car. However, enthusiasts agree that rowing your own gears is more fun. BMW knows that, and it might try to save the stick shift in the electric era. M boss Frank van Meel told Top Gear magazine the engineers have been tinkering with simulated gearboxes.
See The BMW 7 Series That Had The M1 Supercar’s Engine
BMW Group Classic invited us to check out some of its rarest gems, including that Z3 roadster with a V12 engine. We were also allowed to get familiar with a limited-run production model that was only sold in South Africa. A little over 200 units of this E23 7 Series were made at Plant Rosslyn. However, this one’s even rarer since it’s one of just 14 cars equipped with a manual gearbox.
